An ambitious intern. A perfectionist executive. And a whole lot of name calling.
Whip-smart, hardworking, and on her way to an MBA, Chloe Mills has only one problem: her boss, Bennett Ryan. He's exacting, blunt, inconsiderate--and completely irresistible. A Beautiful Bastard.
Bennett has returned to Chicago from France to take a vital role in his family's massive media business. He never expected that the assistant who'd been helping him from abroad was the gorgeous, innocently provocative--completely infuriating--creature he now has to see every day.
Despite the rumours, he's never been one for a workplace hook-up. But Chloe's so tempting he's willing to bend the rules--or outright smash them--if it means he can have her. All over the office.
As their appetites for one another increase to a breaking point, Bennett and Chloe must decide exactly what they're willing to lose in order to win each other.
This is the first book in Christina Lauren’s Beautiful series. I was introduced to this book on twitter, where I find most of my new reads now to be honest, and after hearing such wonderful things about it I downloaded it and started reading it straight away.
The story is all about sassy and ambitious Chloe Mills and her less than amicable relationship with her super hard ass boss Bennett Ryan.
From the blurb I expected that this would be a sort of stereotypical plot with an overbearing boss and his underling who was too weak to resist his advances but actually I was completely wrong in my judgement of Chloe’s character. Chloe is smart and feisty and ambitious and a real match for Bennett Ryan which I think is one of the things which makes them attracted to each other. Both characters have a definite stubborn streak which is evident from the outset and throughout the story. It causes some of the tension that the characters feel and that tension is palpable practically rolling off the pages.
Bennett is every inch the Beautiful Bastard he is made out to be. He’s depicted as this gorgeous guy with irresistible good looks but his bastard-isms – his need for precision, his inconsiderate and direct manner – give him another side to his character, and almost present a challenge for Chloe.
The story zaps along at a fast pace which keeps you hooked, and felt almost exhilarating to be caught up in this wildly passionate romance between the two characters. Chloe and Bennett take turns in telling the story which I absolutely love in a book, particularly in the romance novel because it’s that bit more exciting to have a nosey into the guy’s mind and see how he actually feels, and how those feelings might change. The romance between the two of them is explosive and incredibly passionate which is made completely believable by having an insight into both characters perspectives. Their proximity from their working relationship has been a platform for their undeniable chemistry to grow on.
One thing that annoyed me a little during the first part of the book, even after the characters got together was the fact that they were always so formal calling each other Miss Mills and Mr Ryan. Things changed though for the pair of them and something shifted in their relationship when they started using their first names so I can see why it was necessary.
I couldn’t believe it when I found out that Christina Lauren is actually two people. Two authors – Christina and Lauren. The writing was seamless and I never felt like I was reading the work of more than one person.
I devoured this book in one sitting, I was addicted, hooked, couldn’t put it down. I loved the writing, the whirlwind of it all and I absolutely fell for Bennett Ryan. I downloaded the second and third full books in the series and read them over the same weekend. I’m reviewing this as part of the Gosling Girls Book Tours #SexMeUpReadathon running from the 21st to 25th of July and it definitely comes up to the mark as far as sexy reads are concerned. You will love this series if you like whip-smart, sexy writing with a cast of characters who are recurring throughout the series.
