Review of Beautiful Redemption by Jamie McGuire

The bit on the back…

If A Maddox boy falls in love, he loves forever. But what if he didn't love you, first?

No-nonsense Liis Lindy is an agent of the FBI. Deciding she is married only to her job, she breaks off her engagement and transfers from Chicago to the field office in San Diego. She loves her desk. She is committed to her laptop. She dreams of promotions and shaking hands with the director after cracking an impossible case.

Special Agent in Charge Thomas Maddox is arrogant, unforgiving, and ruthless. He is tasked with putting away some of the world’s toughest criminals, and he is one of the best the Bureau has to offer. Though, as many lives as he’s saved, there is one that is beyond his reach. Younger brother Travis is faced with prison time for his involvement in a basement fire that killed dozens of college students, and the media want a conviction. Travis’s only savior is his unusual tie to the mob. In a deal that will spare his brother, Thomas has agreed to recruit Travis into the FBI.

Liis is stubborn, defiant, and yet somehow softens Thomas’s rough edges, making her the perfect agent to accompany him to the ceremony. Posing as a couple, they must travel to Travis & Abby’s beach vow renewal and give him the news, but when the pretending ends, she finds herself wondering if they were pretending at all.

This is the second book in Jamie McGuire’s Maddox Brothers series. The Maddox family are first introduced to us in Beautiful Disaster which is the story of Travis. This series tells the stories of his brothers. Beautiful Redemption is all about Liis Lindy and Thomas Maddox.

Liis Lindy has relocated to California to progress her career and to start over after splitting with her ex who was much more invested in their relationship than Liis was.

Liis is the narrator throughout the story. Straight away I loved the feisty attitude that Liis had and how she wanted to be treated as an equal. The first scene introduces us to a lesser known part of Liis as she has a one night stand with a gorgeous stranger from her new local bar but equally it shows the “I’ll take what I want” attitude that she has going on. She’s ambitious and a hard worker chasing her dreams. I could really relate to that side of her and found her career interesting because I also used to want to study languages!

Said gorgeous stranger turns out to be not so strange and much more boss like. Special Agent in Charge Thomas Maddox lives in the same building as Liis and also happens to share the same “local”! At first when I was reading this I practically had my fingers crossed in the hope that this fine specimen was indeed a Maddox Brother. Low and behold it was. Wow. The chemistry between Liis and Thomas is instant and I loved that they didn’t know who the other was in the beginning. It meant that as soon as they discovered who they were it only served to heighten the tension between the pair. Liis is a good match for Thomas in that she stands up to him and won’t put up with his crap.

Both characters have had their share of romantic life ups and downs but both of them are affected by Thomas’s past. If you’ve read Beautiful Oblivion you will know more about Thomas, or TJ’s romantic history with his ex Camille, but in this story you get to see just how it affected, and continues to affect him. I felt really sorry for Thomas in this story because I could almost feel this trapped, suffocated feeling that he had it was that palpable and Liis really helps to get him through that by just being herself.

This is standard Jamie McGuire with its share of drama, adrenaline and love. It’s sexy and fast paced - I finished it in less than 24 hours. I would definitely recommend it to Jamie McGuire and Colleen Hoover fans! TJ has a total Miles Archer thing going on – he definitely left an impression!
